Traffic and School Zone Safety

1. Know the Route: Parents/Guardians should know with whom their child is walking or bicycling and what their normal route to and from school is. 
2. Practice the Route: Parents/Guardians are encouraged to practice safe routes with their child and educate them on the rules of the road.
3. Avoid Shortcuts: Remind children not to take shortcuts through isolated areas or play alone in deserted areas.
4. Accompany When Needed: Parents/Guardians should walk or ride with their younger children and occasionally accompany older children to school and/or monitor the route. 
5. Stay Alert at Crossings: Watch for cars at driveways and intersections. Look out for drivers in parked vehicles who may be pulling outonto the street. 
6. Cross Safely: Always use marked crosswalks or intersections. Stop, look left-right-left, and stay alert while crossing. 
7. Ride Safely: Ride bicycles and scooters on the right side of the street, preferably in a bike lane or on a designated multi-use path. Always walk bikes across busy intersections and crosswalks.
8. Wear Helmets: Minors are required to wear helmets at all times when operating e-bikes or e-scooters.
9. Walk Facing Traffic: When a sidewalk is not available, walk on the shoulder of the road facing the oncoming traffic to see and be seen. 
10. Respect Crossing Guards: Crossing guards are there for everyone’s safety. Always follow crossing guard instructions. 
11. Stay Off Devices: Remind children to keep their cell phones put away and headphones off while walking, biking, or riding. 

CCSD Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program encourages safe walking and bicycling to and from schools. SRTS is based on six principles, the “6 E’s“: Education, Encouragement, Engagement, Engineering, Evaluation and Equity.

SRTS offers free programs to K-12 schools that include, but are not limited to, bike-pedestrian safety clinics, bike repair workshops, student safety assemblies, parent workshops, walk-and-roll incentive programs, and helmet fittings. SRTS programs are sustained efforts by parents/guardians, schools, community leaders, and local, state, and federal governments to improve the health and well-being of children by enabling and encouraging them to walk and bicycle to school safely.

[Effective Until June 30, 2026]  

Under NRS 484B.363, a school zone is generally active during the period beginning one-half hour before school starts and ending one- half hour after school ends. School zones may also remain active during the hours students are attending classes when the yellow flashing beacons are operating in a manner indicating the reduced speed limit is in effect.

Drivers should always pay close attention to posted school zone signage, flashing yellow beacons, crossing guards, and pedestrian activity near schools. Reduced speed limits are intended to protect students, staff, and families traveling to and from campus, and violations within school zones may result in increased penalties and fines.

[Effective on July 1, 2026]  

Nevada law requires that school zones remain active during the critical student travel periods beginning 30 minutes before school starts and continuing until 30 minutes after school ends. Additional operational times may also be established based on individual school schedules, traffic conditions, student activity, or roadway safety needs.

Drivers should always pay close attention to:

• Posted school zone signs

• Flashing yellow beacons

• Crossing guards

• Pedestrian activity near schools

Reduced speed limits and traffic restrictions within school zones are intended to protect students, staff, and families traveling to and from campus. Violations occurring within active school zones may result in increased fines and penalties.

The CCSDPD Traffic Bureau is responsible for investigating crashes that occur on Clark County School District property, as well as many crashes occurring on streets immediately adjacent to school campuses where student safety and school-related traffic are directly impacted. This includes collisions involving school district vehicles, school buses, student pedestrians, and traffic incidents occurring in active school zones or near campus access points.

Crashes occurring farther away from school property — such as within neighborhoods, parks, residential streets, or other areas outside the immediate school environment — are generally handled by the local law enforcement agency with primary jurisdiction over that area. Depending on the location, this may include agencies such as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), Henderson Police Department (HPD), North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD), Boulder City Police Department, Nevada State Police, or other local jurisdictions.

CCSDPD works closely with these partner agencies to help ensure traffic safety concerns affecting students, school transportation routes, and surrounding school communities are appropriately addressed throughout Clark County.

For your safety, please avoid confronting traffic violators. Direct contact with drivers can escalate the situation and create additional hazards. Instead, safely observe and report the incident to the dispatcher, providing as much detail as possible. If the situation is an emergency, call 911 immediately.
