International Studies

J. Marlan Walker International School is the first public international school in Nevada. The goals of the school are to develop social and academic competence in two or more languages, have students experience a variety of cultural studies through academics and the arts, and provide instruction that will emphasize high academic performance in all core subject areas. The immediate focus on all grade levels will be the incorporation of thematic units integrating international studies. High interest and skill-based materials will be utilized so that students will be able to perceive the world as an interconnected entity, while developing their reading/writing skills. The students will become thoughtful, independent readers with in-depth comprehension skills. Using non-fiction literature the students will connect their reading to their background knowledge, create sensory images, ask questions, draw inferences, determine importance, synthesize ideas, and problem solve.  Students will be able to perceive the world as an interconnected entity. Within each grade level location, movement, environment, economics and governments will be studied.

K-1        Through the study of geography and the languages of Mexico, Spain, Latin America and the USA, students will perceive the interconnections of Europe and the Americas.

2nd       Through the study of immigration patterns of South Africa, Australia, Canada and the USA, students will perceive the interconnections of the movements of peoples and cultures.

3rd        Through the study of the effects of environment upon selected Native American, African and Amazonian tribes, students will perceive the similarities and differences between disparate peoples.

4th        Through the study of Nevada, the former USSR and China, students will perceive the differences between the economics of capitalism and communism and the interconnections of  the economies of different nations.

5th        Through the study of England, Cuba, Saudi Arabia and the USA students will perceive the similarities and differences between democracies, dictatorships and monarchies.
