Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students:

Welcome to the Home of the Hawks!

I am thrilled to welcome you to the 2007– 2008 school year. This year promises to be the beginning of one of our best years yet. This year’s staff, which includes 30 teachers and four counselors are some the finest, most dedicated educators in the Clark County School District. They will strive to provide our students with positive educational experiences. Their expertise and experience combine to make them a powerful force. Additionally, our caring support staff provides outstanding services which assist our students in being successful. Our goal is to graduate knowledgeable, caring citizens who know and understand how to make a positive impact in their community.

Sunset operates on a seven period class schedule. Early Bird classes begin at 2:00 P.M., and school ends at 8:14 P.M. Students have the opportunity to take eight classes each quarter, if they take Early and Late Bird classes. In addition to these classes, Saturday School Courses are available each quarter. New elective class offerings are consistently made available to students in order to provide them with a full array of opportunities and life experiences.

Because a majority of our students work or attend a day school, we have a no homework policy, providing students attend on a regular basis. Students may lose credit once they exceed SIX absences each quarter. We encourage students and parents to discuss this requirement before enrolling at Cowan Sunset High School.

We are thankful for the support we receive from the community. I encourage every parent and guardian to become involved with our Volunteer Association. Our school improvement initiatives for the 2006-2007 school year focus on increasing student achievement. I welcome your assistance and invite you to work with our School Improvement Team, to promote positive communication within the Cowan Sunset community. Please view our 2005-2006 School Improvement Plan and Accountabililty Report.

In April 2007, Sunset High School underwent the Northwest Accreditation process and you can find our report here. Sunset is now fully accredited through this important procedure. The staff, students, parents and community partners have all worked diligently for the past two years to achieve this goal. We are indeed proud and excited with the realization of this accomplishment.

This year, Cowan Sunset will offer our community EdLine, a system that allows parents the ability to view their student’s academic progress and attendance from home. This program can be accessed on-line. This program, along with our Web site, will provide a wide range of information for students and parents. Please contact the main office to receive the activation code for your account.

In conclusion, we are currently in our third year of the 21st Century grant. With this grant, we have been able to provide students with the Read180 program, My Skills Math Tutor, and additional elective classes and unique course offerings. We are excited to continue providing new and innovative programs through the assistance of the 21st Century grant and look forward to a full menu of services for our students.

I look forward to a long and successful partnership with our Cowan community.

Sincerely,

Anita Williams
