History:
Cowan Sunset High School is a unique school of choice. Its
doors were opened in August of 1999, with a population
of 200 full and part time students. During the school's
infancy period, enrollment was kept low in
order to keep class sizes low. As with other Sunset
and Horizon High Schools, Cowan Sunset was classified as an
alternative school and was under the
direction of Dr. Sid Franklin .
In 2001, the Clark County School District experienced severe
growing pains, and became the sixth largest district in the nation. To
alleviate the pains of growth and to better serve its constituents, the
district was divided into Regions. Sunset H.S. was placed in the Southeast
Region. In January, 2004, the Clark County School District's School Board
reorganized all alternative and behavior schools under one 'mini district',
named The Education Services Division (E.S.D.).
Currently, Sunset H.S. shares the facility with Cowan,
Junior/Senior Behavior School. The Behavior School completes its day at 1:20
PM, allowing us to schedule Early Bird classes starting at 2:00 PM. Our final
period of the day ends at 8:14 PM. The Leadership class is held as a Late Bird
class on Tuesday nights.
