moved to Nevada in 1955. He received his Bachelor of Arts
degree in Political Science from the University of Santa
Clara in 1967 and his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law
School, Los Angeles, California, in 1971. Bob Miller served
as governor for the State of Nevada from 1989 until 1999.
Governor Miller is known as the champion of funding
for elementary schools and class size reduction. One of his
many goals was to see that every single young person in this
State had an opportunity for a quality education. He has
greatly improved the quality of our educational system and
demonstrated his commitment to education in areas such as
class size reduction, early childhood development programs,
and educational technology.
Education was his first budget priority. He
achieved distinction and recognition as the education
Governor throughout his tenure and positioned the education
of Nevada’s children at the forefront of his agenda.
Governor Miller led the nation in increased support for
higher education, class size reduction, and stronger
academic standards. His commitment to high academic
standards was one of the hallmarks of his administration.
His dedication to educating Nevadans to prepare them
to enter the business community has inspired many to follow
in his footsteps. Programs such as School-To-Work have the
ability to achieve milestones because of his participation
and interface with the educational system. His formation of
the Commission on Educational Technology has resulted in the
development of a statewide plan for the use of technology in
schools. Governor Miller started the state youth Art
Exhibit at the Governor’s Mansion, now an annual tradition.
Governor Miller has been the recipient of many
prestigious and distinguished awards, such as the National
Governors’ Association Building Block Award for progress in
Education, Women Executives in State Government Breaking the
Glass Ceiling Award, and the American Cancer Society
Excalibur Award.
He presided over an unprecedented period of economic
expansion in Nevada. Governor Miller improved the lives of
a wide variety of people through his family-related social
programs such as Family-To-Family, Baby Your Baby, and the
Family Resource Centers. The Family-To-Family Program has
been critical in helping low-income mothers and their
children.
During his tenure as Nevada’s Governor, Bob Miller’s
vision for our youth and their education was exemplary. He
enriched and enhanced our school system with new programs,
increased funding, and higher standards. His vision and
accomplishments while in office laid a strong foundation for
educational excellence that Nevada will continue to build
upon far into the next millennium.
