Helen  Jydstrup  Elementary  School
 Dedicated October 17, 1991

Helen M. Jydstrup was born in December of 1912 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The daughter of a pioneer family, Helen gained her secondary education and attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen. At this school, she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in 1935 and Master's degree in 1962. This period of time witnessed her teaching career become a record built on the accomplishments of her students. For more than 20 years she taught in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and South Dakota.

In August 1962, after a distinguished professional life, Helen moved to Las Vegas and with the same spirit that had brought a cherished and enviable academic record, began a new career. She was assigned to Variety School and for the next 23 years was the person who made it easier for her students to speak, listen, play, work, and yes--laugh.

Helen was not content to help just the children she loved so much, she became and activist in the Council for Exceptional Children, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and Phi Delta Kappa. Her other interests and leadership positions included president of the Clark Towers Housing Project; member of the Business and Professional Women;  member of the National Education Association; the Clark County Classroom Teachers Association; and the treasurer of the Women's Democratic Party.

Helen retired from her educational career in 1985. There is no greater honor than to return with fond recollection to those avenues of a life done well. So it will always be for Helen M. Jydstrup who has provided us with a time to share her memories and to allow the Clark County School District to reward her once again. It is fitting that the district dedicates this school for HELEN M. JYDSTRUP--a teacher who really cared.
