Jo Mackey Academy of Leadership and Global Communication Magnet Elementary School developed an emergency relief
project for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Our 3rd grade students established the Emergency Relief Fund Committee
, which had a monetary goal of $1,000.00 dollars. The Emergency Relief Fund Committee commenced
during the week of September 26th, 2005 while providing an enriched academic experience for our student body.
To obtain their goal of $1,000.00 to The American Red Cross, our 3rd grade students:
- Sold decorative paper links for .25 cents each. Each grade level was able to buy a different color link, making a chain.
We hung the links side by side at the end of each week to make a commemorative rainbow.
- We collaborated with our Community Partners, in donating matching funds to Jo Mackey Magnet Elementary School.
Jo Mackey Magnet Elementary School succeeded in taking a proactive role as a leading elementary school in working with
students, parents and local community partners. Our Emergency Relief Fund Committee raised $762.00 by
selling decorative paper links. Our community partnership with Rinker
Materials enabled a donation $500.00. One of Rinker Materials' goals is to remain an integral partner in
the local community in an effort to help keep Las Vegas one of the best and most dynamic cities in the world. Therefore,
by working together we provided the Red Cross of Nevada with a total donation of $1,262.00!
The American Red Cross, Chief Executive Officer, Penny Towers attended our celebration
assembly, whereby our own Jo Mackey Magnet School student body presented the check for $1,262.00. Penny Towers
openly thanked Jo Mackey Magnet School students for their outstanding efforts in providing a commemorative community service
project and exemplifying social responsibility.
