Oran K. Gragson Elementary School

The first ten minutes of school set the tone for the day, so please see that your child/children arrive at school on time. We set that tone of the day with an exciting outside morning ceremony with students in class lines startingf at 8:45 with the sound of the Gragson drum section.  Students should not be on campus before 8:30 a.m. because there is no adult supervision until that time.  The only exception is students eating breakfast in the lunchroom.

At the end of the day, please ensure that your children are picked up from school immediately following dismissal time at 3:06 p.m.  If there is a problem, it is important that you make alternate arrangements for pickup and notify the school or sign your student(s) up for SafeKey.  Applications are available in the office.  If your student is not picked up within 15 minutes, they will be placed in SafeKey.

Visitors

All visitors must report to the office when they arrive at the building and receive a visitor’s pass after signing in.  Parents are always welcome at Gragson but we ask that to visit a classroom or speak to a teacher that an appointment be made prior to arriving. Sometimes the teacher is giving a test or may not be present that day.  Students from other schools or friends of Gragson students are not allowed to visit during the school day.

If you pick your student up after school, please do so outside the building. Tell your children where to meet you outside the building.  Parents in the hallways before school is dismissed may cause class disruptions and create additional persons in the hallways after school. Your cooperation is appreciated.

School Safety and Security

School safety is always a priority.  Gragson is a closed and secure campus to ensure the safety of our students, your children.  Please help us by understanding and abiding by our visitor rules. Additionally, we would ask parents to assist in checking student backpacks and pockets before coming to school.  Weapons such as pocket knives, BB/Pellet guns, sharp instruments, fireworks, and handguns, or other like items are NOT to be brought to school for any reason.  Even a toy is dangerous because it may look like the real thing!

Please remind your child that some dangerous items used during family activities under parent supervision, like pocket knives, are considered weapons and ARE NOT to be brought to school for any reason.

SafeKey Program

The city operated Safekey Program is available for those children of working parents who need supervision before and after school.  The morning session is from 7:00-8:30 a.m.  The afternoon session is from 3:06-6:00 p.m.  For enrollment and more information, call Robinson Community Center, 229-2526.

Attendance

The importance of regular attendance cannot be overemphasized.  We expect students to be in school every day that they are physically able.  Should your child be absent, please send a signed note of explanation to be given to the teacher when the student returns.  If a student is to be absent for more than two days, parents should notify the office.  A student may make up work for excused absences; however, this should be done after the absence, not before.  The teacher needs to provide necessary instruction before assigning work. If a student is absent more than 20 days within a school year, he/she may be retained in the same grade for the next year as directed by state law.

School Rules and Discipline

At Gragson, we believe students should develop self-discipline.  All students are expected to be kind and to work hard.  Each teacher will inform parents and students both of classroom rules and consequences in the room.  We ask parents to discuss with your children the importance of, and the need for, good behavior and a good attitude while at school.

We will not tolerate fighting, disrespect toward others, obscene language, or destruction of school property.  For students that consistently break rules, we will ask their parents to come to the school to help resolve the problem.

On the playground, students are encouraged to participate in a variety of organized games.  Physical contact and fighting, to include “play fighting” are not allowed. Toys of any kind, including sports equipment, are to be left at home. P.E. equipment is provided at school.

School Telephone

Students, in cases of emergency or necessity, may use the telephone; however, it should be used with discretion, not to obtain permission to visit a friend, etc.  Your cooperation in discussing this with your child/children is appreciated.  Please do not send children to school with a cell phone. If necessary, however, please discuss with the teacher.  If a cell phone is used in the classroom, it will be confiscated and held in the office until the end of the day or until a parent picks it up.

School Parties

In accordance with CCSD Regulations, school parties are planned for four occasions a year:  Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day.  Activities are also appropriate in the primary grades (k-2) at Easter.  Birthday parties are not permitted during instructional time.

Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast is available at 8:15 a.m. each morning.  Hot lunch is also available.  Both breakfast and lunch are provided at no cost (FREE) to all students.  Continued completion of free or reduced applications may be required by the District Food Service Department to continue the no cost privilege.

Parent Conferences/Communication

Communication between the parent and teacher is critical.  We encourage parents to communicate with their child’s teacher at any time.  Regular parent-teacher conferences will be held as necessary.  If a student is doing unsatisfactory work, the teacher will telephone or send home notes.  District scheduled Parent/Teacher conferences are as follows:

November 14-17, 2006 – Track 5

December 12-15, 2006 – Tracks 1, 2, 3, and 4

The teacher will also send home an unsatisfactory work notice by the seventh week of the  grading period.

Homework

Parents are encouraged to assist students with their schoolwork at home.  The District sponsored Homework Hotline (799-5111) is also available to assist students.  In addition to helping your childe with homework, here are some suggestions to help students with their education outside the school:

  1. Make a game with your child about who can bring the most interesting, new words to talk about while in the car.
  2. Have your child read the boxes of the items that are bought at the grocery store.
  3. Have your child keep track of the spending at the grocery store, including figuring how much produce is when buying the pound.  Have child compare items to figure out what is a better buy.
  4. Play “Stump the Parents” – have your child watch a show or read a book that is a biography or about a topic (shows and books about animals are readily available) and have them try to stump you with facts they found out while watching the show or reading.

If you need resources for your child, the public library is a good place to start.  There are also Websites parents can use for resources (most libraries have internet access available to the public as long as they have a library card):

Medication

Students who take medication during the school day must deposit all medicine in the office, and a parent or guardian must sign a Medication Release (CCF-643).  All medication is dispensed by office staff and kept in the health office.

Dress Code

District regulations require that:

  • Students must wear shoes that offer sanitary and safety protection. For safety, sandals should not be worn on PE days.
  • Shirts or blouses must be appropriately buttoned in accord with the design of that shirt or blouse.  The length must extend beyond the belt level.
  • All attire must be hemmed and at least fingertip length (shorts, skorts, skirts, and dresses).
  • Transparent, see-through tops, bare midriff, strapless, spaghetti straps, low-cut clothing or tops and outfits that provide minimum coverage are prohibited.
  • Hats worn in inappropriate areas such as classrooms and other designated areas are prohibited.
  • Clothing with slogans or advertising, which, by their controversial or obscene nature, disrupt the educational setting, is also prohibited.

Bicycycles, Skateboards, Scooters, Roller Blades

A locked bicycle parking area is located on the south side of the school.  It will be locked during the day.  Parents are encouraged to purchase bike locks since there have been bicycles stolen over the fence and the school is not responsible for stolen bicycles.  If bikes are ridden to school, they must be walked while on the school grounds.

Skateboards, scooters, and roller blades may not be ridden on campus.  Additionally, they must be carried while in the building so no oil from the pavement is left on carpets.

Picking Up Children

As previously mentioned, please arrange with your child a certain place outside to meet him/her.  If you child is to meet you at your car after school, please ensure that they are careful in coming to the car.  There are a lot of cars at the end of school and some do not pay close attention to walking children.  If you can park your car and meet your child on the school grounds, it would be better. But please do not double park as other parents will need to depart. The Police/Fire lane must be open at all times.

Very Important!  If you are across the street and picking up your children by car, please meet them somewhere close to the crosswalk. Students must cross Honolulu at the crosswalks.  A far safer procedure is to meet them out back of the school off Sandhill Street.  There is plenty of room to park off the street.

Lost and Found

A Lost and Found box for clothing and lunch boxes is located in the small area next to the stage in the Multi-Purpose room.  Small or valuable items will be in the office.  Please put first and last names on items to identify them easily.

Personal Belongings

Please do not allow your students to bring items to school which are not part of the educational program unless specifically requested by the teacher.  Things like radios, walkmen, small video games, etc. are disruptive to the school day.  These items may be confiscated and held for parents to pick up.

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)

Gragson has an active PTO and we invite all parents to join as members and become involved.

Report Cards

Report cards will be issued to students three times a year.  The times will be when students have completed approximately 12 weeks of actual time in school, not including track breaks.  Report cards will contain academic and behavior grades as well as attendance.  At the end of the first grading period, Parent/Teacher conferences will be held throughout the district and report cards distributed at those conferences.

Damage To School Property

Parents will be held responsible for intentional damage to school property on the part of their student.
