"Cozine Sight Word Climbers Program"

We are really excited about the sight word program that was started at the beginning of the school year. You might ask, what are sight words? They are words that good readers instantly recognize without having to “figure them out”. Believe it or not, these most common high-frequency words make up nearly 65% of all common reading materials such as books, newspaper, and magazines. That’s why we want our Cozine Climbers to master them.

Volunteers go around to the classrooms and ask your child to read a list of words, 25 at a time, to check on mastery of the words. As students progress, they receive a sight word tag for a specific number of words they complete, depending upon their grade level. We already have a few students who have mastered all 1,000 sight words!

Of course, we want all of our students to climb to the top! The best way you can assist at home is by helping your child study the words on the lists sent home. You can make flash cards or play memory games along with pointing out the sight words in books your child is reading.

We continue to need more volunteers to help make our program a success in school. It only takes about an hour of your time a few times a month to make a difference! There are no set time schedules and you can let the teacher know when you are able to volunteer. If you are interested in being trained as a volunteer for our Cozine Sight Word Climber program, please contact Mrs. Cheryl Davis, our Literacy Specialist at 799-0690 ext. 4019.
