How this came to be (the process)...

A meeting regarding the implementation of Standard Student Attire (SSA) at Cheyenne High School was held on January 10, 2006. The meeting was productive since a lot of parents had a lot of things to say on both sides of the issue. At the conclusion of the meeting, each family received a survey to give their input.  Here are the results:

82 families completed the non-binding survey that night

69% Support SSA for the 2006-2007 school year as recommended by the SSA Committee

26% Do not support SSA

.03% were not decided

Remember too that at the Cheyenne High School Open House on September 22, 2005, parents completed a non-binding survey.  Here are those results again:

498 Parents completed a non-binding survey

85% or 424 of those parents support Standard Student Attire

14.9% or 74 of those parents do not support Standard Student Attire

.1% of those parents were undecided

On September 21, 2005, 89 Cheyenne High School staff members completed  a non-binding survey. The results were as follows:

86.5% Support Standard Student Attire and believe it will improve learning

6.75% Support Standard Student Attire but do not believe it will improve learning

6.75% Do not support Standard Student Attire and do not believe it will improve learning

Most parents have indicated that they desire mandatory Standard Student Attire because they believe it will make it easier for school officials to recognize non-students on campus; therefore, it will help maintain a safer and more secure school environment. THE ADMINISTRATION AT CHEYENNE HIGH SCHOOL AGREE. In other words, school officials will know who belongs and who does not belong on  campus.

Based on these results, which indicated that staff and community overwhelmingly want SSA at Cheyenne, I informed the Northeast Region Superintendent, my boss, that Cheyenne High School would be moving forward with the spring survey of our families (as dictated by CCSD Regulation 5131) in an effort to add finality and implement SSA at Cheyenne High School for the 2006-2007 school year.

Remember, one (1) survey was mailed to each family and if 55% of the RETURNED surveys agree, it's mandatory for four (4) school years. Cheyenne DOES NOT send or receive these surveys! The district mailed them to our parents, MANPOWER tabulated the results and informed the district. Then, the principal was informed.

Here is what the Cheyenne High School Standard Student Attire Committee has recommended for mandatory adoption and what the BINDING Survey presented to parents in April (depending on completion of zoning for the 2006-2007 school year).

The required colors (per CCSD Regulation 5131, which can be found on this link) of khaki, navy, white, and the optional color of yellow.

Denim pants in basic/optional colors - in this case white, khaki, or yellow are permissible (Navy blue denim will not be allowed at high school level per the CCSD Board’s Intent and regulation 5131).

Long or short sleeve shirts and/or blouses must have a collar.

All shirts must be PLAIN AND SOLID in required and optional colors.

Shirts may have a school logo or small brand identification (not to exceed the size of a quarter) but may not have words.

Sweatshirts/sweatsuits/sweaters – solid & plain in school colors (no words with or without logo or with or without emblems smaller than a quarter).

Shorts, skirts or skorts (no blue jean material at high school level) in school colors.

Jumpers/dresses (no blue jean material at high school level) in school colors.

OPTIONAL - Neckties may be worn in any color on any day.

Additional stricter guidelines for Cheyenne High School are: pants must be sized to fit and worn above the waistline, t-shirts worn underneath collared shirts must meet the school color requirements above, and sweatshirts may not include a hood.

Coats, jackets (hoods acceptable), gloves, mittens, and scarfs may be worn in any color!

Take note that only one (1) survey was mailed to each household and all parents were asked is "YES" or "NO." In other words, do you agree or not. For further specifics on Standard Student Attire for boys and girls see regulation 5131, which can be linked from this website. This regulation will also answer numerous additional questions you may have. Understand, that the stipulations above are what the Cheyenne High School Standard Student Attire Committee has recommended and what Cheyenne has move forward with at this juncture.
