Tardy Policy

It is the philosophy of the Clark County School District and Centennial High School that tardies are a serious disruption to classroom learning and therefore will not be tolerated. Centennial High School began implementing tardy sweeps in an effort to minimize student tardies. The tardy sweep has been used successfully in the past at Centennial and those students returning are familiar with this plan.

When a tardy sweep is initiated, teachers are informed over the intercom to lock their doors. Students who are not in class when the tardy bell rings and are not in possession of a valid signed pass will be detained by the Centennial High School Security Team, issued a Tardy Policy Violation Notice (yellow copy) and sent to class.

The following discipline plan will be utilized for tardy sweep violators:

Please accompany your son/daughter to school and reinstate him/her in the Discipline/Attendance office located upstairs next to the Deans' office from 6:30 am until 7 am. Failure to reinstate your student on the day following the tardy violation will result in the student being assigned in-house suspension, and the student will not be allowed to attend school until a parent/guardian signs him in. Further disciplinary action will result for continued tardies. Please bring identification with you when you sign in.

It is the hope of the administration and staff at Centennial High School that with your support, tardies will not become a major issue or disruption on our campus. Please discuss this policy with your son or daughter in an effort to prevent them from being caught in a tardy sweep.

Absence Policy

Grades 9-12 (Regulation 5113.2) The Board of School Trustees requires that students enrolled in a Clark County School must attend school regularly in accordance with the Nevada Revised Statutes. When a student is absent, the educational experiences lost during that absence are irretrievable since the instruction and interaction in the instructional setting cannot be duplicated through makeup work. The Nevada Revised Statutes provide that corrective steps and /or sanctions be taken or applied when a student does not attend school. Frequent Absences and tardies reduce scholastic achievement. Centennial High School requires exemplary attendance. Attendance is strictly enforced so that we are not only compliant with the Nevada Revised Statues, but more importantly, we want to ensure that students have the best opportunities to experience success beyond graduation. The Nevada Administration Code 389.040 defines the Carnegie Unit that states that a student who misses excessive hours of seat time in a class may not earn credit in that particular class. Students who exceed 6 unverified Absences in any class per semester will not earn credit and may be referred to an alternative educational program and will not gain credit from Centennial High School .

Absences

Students more than 30 minutes late to class will be marked absent. Notices will be sent to the student's recorded residence after the third, fifth, and eighth absences. School attendance notifications are also mailed to the residence. Absences while participating in a school-sanctioned activity or while on suspension or required parent conference will not be included in the absence total.

Approved Absences

Absences are approved if the student is physically or mentally unable to attend school, or the absence is related to the student's disability and the course work has been completed.

If the approval of the teacher or principal or his designee has been given for an unavoidable absence due to an emergency, then the absence will be excused. Other approved Absences are required court appearances or a religious holiday. Also, if the absence has been arranged pursuant to the request of a parent or legal guardian prior to the absence and does not exceed the allowable ten (10) arranged days per school year, the absence(s) is/are excused.

Unapproved Absences

An absence is unapproved if the arranged absence was not requested in writing in advance of the absence or exceeded the allowable ten (10) arranged days per school year. Or, if the absence was not due to the physical or mental inability of the student to attend school, the student's disability, an emergency, is a required court appearance, or religious holiday. The parent or guardian must provide written notification to the school attendance office within 3 days of the absence. Failure to do this will result in an unexcused absence.

Prearranged Absences

According to Nevada Revised Statutes, and CCSD Policy 5113, August 2007, the parent must prearrange such absences anticipated absences. Prearranged absence forms are located at the attendance desk in the main office. Arranged absences must be requested in writing in advance. These absences must be due to the physical or mental inability of the student to attend school, the student's disability, an emergency, a required court appearance, or religious holiday.
