Senior
Project
All magnet Seniors take “Magnet Senior Seminar” where
students are working in their cohorts on community service projects.
Leadership students take on a unique issue of their choosing in the
national “Project Citizen” program and the law students
participate in “Trial by Peers”. During the second semester
the seminar class is dedicated to the completion of “Senior
Thesis Project” where students work on a unique expression
of their magnet experience through digital media and the optional
production of a video documentary of their years at the Academy.
The Senior Project is as unique as the student because it should
reflect their own experience in the program. Beginning in the Freshman
year students have assignments in their magnet classes and projects
which should be posted to the website they have created in Computer
Applications. Each year the website should be more complex and have
a digital portfolio of their best papers and projects from each class
experience. The website is a component of the project and a required
element of the program.
Students are encouraged to take Broadcast Journalism in order to
develop their digital storytelling abilities and are strongly encouraged
to design and create their own video documentary of their magnet
experience. All magnet students will have access to Apple Powerbooks
which have the Microsoft Office applications as well as iMovie and Final
Cut Express video editing programs. All students must successfully present
their project to the Magnet Graduation Committee to receive a certificate
of completion of magnet studies. All magnet students must develop the
following:
• A website and digital portfolio
• Digital photographs or video footage of their experience in the program
• Either a 45 minute documentary or a 20 page thesis paper discussing
their experience in the program illustrating the main themes and
concepts
• ½ credit of community service (60 hours)
• Credit to receive an Honors Diploma
• Successful completion of Cohort community service projects
