All magnet students are required to take the primary level of classes
in the theme regardless of year of entry. Students admitted during
the Freshman year must take the class titled “Fundamentals
of Law and Research” where the first semester is dedicated
to exploring the historical development of global legal systems and
the evolution of the western system of law. The second semester is
dedicated to the understanding of the historical foundations of the
American legal system and the issues related to the American concept
of rights and freedoms. All ninth graders are enrolled in “Computer
Applications” where they are instructed in all Word Office
applications and website creation/design.
Sophomore year all students are enrolled in “Leadership and
Organizational Management” where the first semester is devoted
to understanding leadership style, and the psychology of group management.
The second semester is dedicated to understanding the ways in which
we organize ourselves through political and economic systems and
how they exist in the United States. At the end of the sophomore
year students are asked to choose a major field of study and then
are placed in a “cohort” group. This is a group of students
who then will work together in their magnet themed and required classes
until graduation to support each other in their academic goals and
development.
Students in the Leadership Cohort are expected to take the magnet
classes of World and American Leaders and Microeconomics AP (grade
11) as well as be enrolled in Honors or AP English and US History
AP. They then will complete their course of studies with Media and
Policy Studies, Macroeconomics AP and US Government AP. Students
in the Law Cohort are enrolled in Constitutional Law and Forensics
(structured debate) and US History AP. During the senior year students
analyze the difference between and issues related to Civil and Criminal
Law and specifically focus their skills in Legal Debate and Mock
Trial and are enrolled in US Government AP as well. |
