In order to recieve a standard high school diploma, students are required to pass all portions of the Nevada High School Proficiency Examination (NHSPE).  This includes a writing, a reading, and a math portion.  A science portion will have to be passed by the graduating class of 2009.  Testing begins in the spring of the sophomore year and will be repeated in 11th and 12th grade until all areas are passed.  Students will not be retested on sections they have already passed. Passing scores are determined by the year of first entry to the 9th grade.  To find out more about the NHSPE, including required scores and content samples please follow our link to the Nevada Department of Education’s website:  www.doe.nv.gov.

To take a practice proficiency you can follow our link to www.nde.state.nv.us and select “High School Proficiency Tests” from the menu.

In the case that a student is unable to pass a portion of the NHSPE, he or she will not be eligible to receive a Standard Diploma, but rather a Certificate of Attendance.  The student will still be able to participate in graduation ceremonies and there will be no distinction between that student and the other graduates. State tests cannot be waived, but they may be repeated until passed for up to one year following graduation to receive a standard high school diploma.  After that the student will test through adult education and receive an adult diploma.

To prepare our students for the NHSPE, we require all seniors who have not passed the Math portion of the exam to be enrolled in a Math Applications class.  This class is structured to help students pass.  If the test is passed in November, the student can be removed from the class second semester.
