Each applicant who lives outside the Clark County area, and who has been offered a teaching contract with the district, is assigned a Community Ambassador and a teacher who is presently employed with the district. Financial Responsibility: In Nevada, legal and financial responsibility is based upon the law of negligence. If an accident is your fault, that is, you are negligent, you are responsible for bodily injury and property damages suffered by the innocent party. To assure that innocent parties are adequately compensated for their injuries, Nevada law requires that all registered owners of motor vehicles have security for tort liability arising from the use of their motor vehicles. Please contact your local insurance agent or the Department of Motor Vehicles. Department of Motor Vehicles (nevadadmv.state.nv.us/index.htm)
After establishing residency in the state of Nevada, you have 30 days in which to register your vehicle and obtain your Nevada driver's license. You may do this at any of the full-service motor vehicle branch offices in Clark County. New Nevada Vehicle Registration Information: If you are coming from another state, please register your vehicles within 30 days after you establish residency in this state or before the out-of-state registration expires, whichever comes first. Documents needed in order to register vehicles are the originals or your: 1. Most recent registration, 2. Your out-of-state license plates, 3. Nevada emission control certificate (smog check) - in Clark and Washoe counties only, 4. Nevada proof of insurance card in the exact name(s) which will be on the registration, 5. A Vehicle Inspection Certificate (VIN check), 6. Certificate of Title if ownership is changing. (If not changing ownership, the owner has the option of retaining the out-of-state title). There are exceptions, of course. For example, motorcycles do not require an emission control certificate, trailers need no insurance card, and diesel vehicles over 8500 gvw have exceptions, also. Vehicles with a registration address that lie in a smog check county but with a zip code listed as smog exempt, need not have a smog check performed. Names of the title, registration, and insurance will all need to agree, as will the vehicle identification numbers. Contact a DMV office with your concerns. More about registering your vehicle Liability insurance information Nevada law requires you to have at least $15,000, $30,000 and $10,000 in liability insurance. Every policy must be subject to a limit of not less than $15,000 because of bodily injury to or death of one person in any one accident to a limit of not less than $30,000 because of bodily injury to or destruction of property, and to a limit of not less than $10,000 because of injury to or destruction of property of others in any one accident. We recommend that you do not keep your insurance policy or papers in your vehicle which show liability limits. Only the Nevada approved insurance card validating your coverage is necessary, but it must be issued by a Nevada - licensed agent. Emission control certificate (smog check) - in Clark and Washoe counties only. Emissions inspections are required annually in Nevada. Smog check stations are commercially owned and operated sites throughout Nevada cities. Vehicles which do not require emissions tests include model years 1967 or older, alternatively fueled (not gasoline or diesel powered) vehicles, motorcycles, diesel vehicles over the 8,500 GVW, and new vehicles that have been registered less than two years. Emissions testing on vehicles purchased from a private party is the buyer's responsibility. Nevada dealers are required to perform the test, when required, on every vehicle they sell. General Information New residents may use a valid driver's license and vehicle registration from their former state for up to 30 days. At any time during the 30 days, they may turn them in for nevada items. but they must do so within 30 days or before the out-of-state items expire, whichever comes first. Students, active duty military personnel, (including their accompanying family members), and other living temporarily in Nevada are not required to register their vehicles to obtain a driver's license as long as they are not employed in Nevada. However, they must have a valid vehicle registration, driver's license, and insurance from their home state in order to operate vehicles in Nevada. Should someone such as a military dependent or non-resident student obtain employment in Nevada, they will be subject to DMV rules as a Nevada resident. Address changes are to be reported within ten days of relocation. Both driver's license and vehicle registration address changes are submitted to a local DMV office. Informing your insurer of your relocation is done directly with your agent. If you are stopped for any reason while driving and do not have valid registration, license, and insurance evidence, you are subject to fines and vehicle impound. Insurance Verification Program We have a mandatory liability responsibility regulation that is met through Nevada licensed insurance agents. All registered vehicles are required to have the minimum liability coverage. Should the coverage lapse while registration is still current, significant fees will be charged before the registration will be reinstated. Roadside spot-checks, direct mail verification, and insurance company data comparisons provide verification methods to ensure compliance. Call 1-800-344-0483 for more information. New Driver License Information: New Residents Welcome to Nevada! New residents must obtain their Nevada driver license and vehicle registration within 30 days. See the DMV New Resident Guide for tips and a checklist of items you will need. You must surrender your out-of-state license. All applicants take a vision test. Other tests will be waived if:
If your social security number is not printed on your driver license, you will need to bring your social security card. If you do not have a card, call for an explanation of alternative documents. If your license is expired, and you are under 25 or otherwise do not meet these requirements, you will have to take a written test and possibly a skills test. Please call your local DMV office for details. Items to Have Before You Come to the Office
