Troops to Teachers is now official and funded.
Public Law 107-110, the "No Child Left Behind Act of 2001"
was signed into law by President Bush on January 8, 2002. Title
II, Part C, Chapter A, authorizes the continuation of the Troops-to-Teachers
Program for an additional five years. Congress passed the Education
Appropriations bill, part of H.R. 3061, which provides $18M
for financial assistance and to maintain the network of Troops
to Teachers state offices. Financial assistance may be in the
form of a stipend of up to $5K to help pay for teacher certification
programs, or a bonus of $10K to accept employment in a "high-needs"

Depending on experience and education, former military personnel can teach for the Clark County School District by choosing and successfully completing one of the four options:
1. Degree in Education: If you currently hold a bachelor's degree in education (including student teaching), complete the interest form on this page in order to start the application.
2. Distance Education through Rio Salado College or Western Governors University.
Rio
Salado College: If you have a bachelor's degree in a non-educational field, you can obtain teacher certification by taking online classes through Rio Salado College. Necessary coursework can be completed while you finish your military tour of duty.
Rio Salado College
has an excellent, Nevada state approved,
post-baccalaureate online teacher preparation program for current
and former military personnel. Courses are delivered asynchronously
via the Internet allowing students to access their courses anytime,
anyplace. The courses are designed to actively engage students
with the course materials and also provide one-on-one guidance
from an instructor who is a practicing, certified K-12 teacher.

3. CCSD Alternative Route to Licensue (ARL): If you have a bachelor's degree in a non-educational field, you can obtain teacher certification by enrolling in the ARL program. You will need to move to Las Vegas in order to participate in the 6-month ARL program. If you attend and successfully complete the Alternate Route to Licensure (ARL) program, you will be required to pass the PPST test (secondary teachers must also pass the content knowledge test) before you are able to teach.

4. Business and Industry (B&I): If you worked full time in a vocational area for at least five (5) years, military personnel may qualify for a Business and Industry license. This license would allow an individual to teach a vocational program in a high school setting or a middle school magnet program.
For example, a candidate who was a mechanic for 20 years and met all the B&I requirements set forth, would receive a Business and Industry license to teach high school mechanics.
