Department Overview

Role of Occupational & Physical Therapists

Occupational Therapists focus on adapted materials and methods needed for functional performance in classrooms in the areas of fine, sensory, and visual motor skills and school environments where activities of daily living occur.

Physical Therapists focus on mobility within the school, functional performance in gross motor skills related to accessing the school environment, use of adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs and adaptive seating, and overall access to the educational setting.

School-Based Occupational & Physical Therapy

The goal of school-based occupational and physical therapy may be defined as:

  • To support and promote access and/or participation in the school environment and curriculum.
  • Communication with educators, families, and the community to promote the student's functional independence and participation with peers in the educational environment.
  • Related services that are indicated when a student's educationally related needs require the expertise of a therapist.
  • Related services that support the student’s educational program identified by the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
