Department Overview

Department Functions

The Nevada Alternate Assessment is a grade level alternate assessment for a percentage of students who receive special education services. The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) requires that students with disabilities be included in each state’s system of accountability and demonstrate access to the general education curriculum. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) states the involvement of all students in the state’s assessment and accountability system by requiring states to report student achievement for all groups of students. These federal laws ensure that all students are taught with their peers while being academically challenged and taught to high standards.

Nevada developed the alternate assessment for students whom participation in the general statewide assessment is not appropriate, even with accommodations. Students taking the Nevada Alternate Assessment have opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge of the Nevada Standards through three Alternative Grade Level Indicators; level one being the least complex and level three being the most. This ability to demonstrate knowledge of core content and skills is critical as educators seek to provide access to the general education curriculum while fostering higher expectations for students with significant cognitive disabilities.
