Preparedness and Prevention

Providing for a safe and educationally stimulating learning environment is the primary mission for the Office of School Safety and Crisis Management Department. Clark County School District is taking proactive measures to protect the safety and well being of all our students and employees. CCSD is working diligently with all community emergency responders as well as all jurisdictional emergency management governmental agencies across the valley to ensure a timely and seamless response in the event of a critical incident at one of the schools.

Clark County School District also is a key resource for facilities, transportation and other key elements for a regional wide response to a community critical event. As the community prepares and plans to respond to potential threats, CCSD is an active partner in lending its support, expertise and resources to assist on a community-wide basis. Collaboration between the emergency management agencies on both a local and state level and CCSD is a priority of this office in efforts to assist in the provision of a safe learning environment for children. All schools in CCSD have crisis plans on site to provide support for students and teachers in the event of a crisis. The actions taken are event dependent. In a crisis, the school’s primary objective is to safely provide for the welfare of the students and staff and ultimately, to keep them out of harm’s way. The ability for each school and district-wide resources to remain flexible, working within a larger public safety umbrella, thereby ensuring the safety of students and employees is the goal of the community-at-large, the district and this office.

In addition to Clark County School District’s response capability in the event of an emergency, in the area of prevention this office is also working diligently in mitigation domain with emphasis in the creation of a safe school climate for optimum learning. Learning will not occur if students are afraid to come to school or when they are in school are anxious because of their perception of feeling unsafe. Bullying, recognized as a more subtle form of violence is being addressed through the initiation of evidenced based programs that promote positive school climate and acceptance of all students regardless of what makes kids unique or different. Through the Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant provided by three governmental agencies (Departments of Justice, Education, and Health and Human Services), strides are being made in expanding mental health services as well as emotional support and service delivery to students and their families who find themselves in crisis.

As an adjunct to the provision of mental health services, the department also provides threat assessment services by a trained staff that includes school psychologists and counselors. Their primary responsibility is to work with school police and referring schools in the evaluation of those students who have made threats of harm to themselves or others.

The Office of School Safety and Crisis Management prides itself in responding to the needs of students and employees in CCSD. Training and awareness activities will continue in all areas of crisis management and school safety to keep current with sound practices while at the same time dedicating itself to the promotion of positive school climate, good emotional health and the well being of all our students in CCSD.
