Sandy Miller Teacher Named Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year
Chad Hyatt, a third grade teacher at Sandy Miller Academy for International Studies, has been awarded Wal-Mart's coveted Teacher of the Year for the State of Nevada. His journey began when a student nominated him for the local level competition at a neighborhood Wal-Mart; which he won. The next step of the journey led to an intra-Nevada competition in which he was designated the winner. Now the decision is left up to Mr. Hyatt of whether to pursue national honors in the 50 State competitions. Mr. Hyatt has been recognized as a teacher-leader at his school site, the only authorized Primary Years International Baccalaureate World School in the state of Nevada. He has presented at regional professional development sessions, the annual CATESOL conference in Southern Nevada, and has been a guest speaker in classes at Nova Southern University. In addition, Mr. Hyatt has written and received grants for his classroom several times.

Clark Teacher patents scientific instrument
The United States Patent Office has recently awarded patent #7,268,563 to Dr. Jeff Sanders, faculty member of Clark High School. His doctoral work in physics at the University of South Florida involved investigating the spin polarization in newly engineered materials that are candidates for future hard drives and "spin-electronic" devices. "This research was funded by the department of defense and the U.S. Navy", said Sanders. "A very highly spin polarized material would make the ultimate hard drive and be the basis for new electronics that are faster, more durable, and have less power consumption." The invention is a scientific instrument that uses superconductors such as tin, lead and niobium in a liquid helium environment below 4.2 Kelvin to take these measurements. "It's a lot of fun, and very cool!, pun intended", said Dr. Sanders. "Our research also has applications for counter-terrorism as experimental prototype sensors were built for detecting nerve gases and bio-chemical warfare agents." Sanders is enjoying his second year at Clark High School, teaching physics, pre-calculus and robotics; it is his 12th year teaching.
