Often we are asked, "What can I do, as a parent, to prepare my child for a Theatre class in the fall?" There are several things you can do:
Take your child to see a live production. Summer is the perfect time to drive forty minutes to see a musical of Super Summer Theater at Spring Mountain Ranch. The shows are outdoors, and it is usually quite a bit cooler there than in town. You can also drive three hours to see a production at the Tony award winning Regional Theatre, Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah. Their summer season is a great opportunity to see some of the best in Regional Theatre. Even though their main drive is Shakespeare, there are other shows: dramas, comedies, and musicals that appeal to everyone. Theatre is an art form that is meant to be experienced live.
Open up your child's imagination by encouraging them to read. The more they read, the better their imagination will be. In theatre we are constantly using our imaginations, whether it is for Pantomime, Improvisation, or creating a scene. The more a child reads, the better their imagination will be and the more creative they will become.
Rent a filmed version of a play. This will expose you and your child to plays if you are not able to attend a live production, and if you are able to find a script of the actual play (many are available in your local library), you and your child can discuss the similarities and differences between the play and the film.
