Alternative Routes to Licensure Program Overview

The Clark County School District is the 5th largest and the fastest growing school district in the country. Nation-wide teacher shortages , combined with the growth in our student population, has made it necessary for the district to seek alternative ways to recruit, train and hire excellent teachers for our students. The Alternative Routes to Licensure Program (ARL) is a unique opportunity for an individual to enter a career as an educator. Upon acceptance, initial training, completion of all program requirements, and being selected for a contract, candidates are able to teach in their own classrooms while completing the requirements for full licensure in Nevada. Alternative Routes to Licensure Programs are available in Special Education, Elementary Education with a Teaching English as a Second Language endorsement, and secondary Math, Science and English.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES TO LICENSURE PROGRAM

HERE’S HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS:

STEP 1
If you apply and are accepted into this program, you will complete 120-150 hours of professional development classes. Actual hours vary by program. These classes are designed to prepare you for your own classroom. During this pre-service training, you will receive specific information on issues such as: techniques for lesson planning, classroom management skills, implementing state standards into your curriculum, and much more. These professional development classes are scheduled in the evenings and occasionally on Saturdays so as not to interfere with your current employment. There is no cost to attend, nor is there compensation for attending this mandatory professional development training.

STEP 2
Upon completion of your professional development training, candidates will be required to complete additional coursework at the college/university level. Elementary TESL and Special Education programs will require a minimum of nine credits. Secondary programs will require a minimum of three credits. These classes are scheduled in the evenings and occasionally on Saturdays so as not to interfere with your current employment. Be prepared to pay for all college/university coursework. However, the district does try to subsidize with designated funding when available.

STEP 3
Provide proof of passing all three portions of the PRAXIS I Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST). For testing information contact the Prometric Testing Center at 889-4132, or visit their website at www.ets.org (609-921-9000). If you have passed the CBEST or have a Master's degree, the PPST is not required.

Candidates for English, Math or Science will be required to take PRAXIS II content knowledge test in addition to the PPST. For testing information, visit www.ets.org/praxis.

STEP 4
Upon completion of a satisfactory interview related to teaching, the Clark County School District Human Resources Division will make your application information available to principals who have vacancies. There is no guarantee that a principal will select you.

STEP 5
If you are selected by a principal and approved for a contract by the Human Resources Division, y
ou are required to teach on an alternative license for three years. During this time you must receive five satisfactory evaluations from your principal and complete all required coursework. The total number of credit hours required for full certification varies by program. Once you have met all of the coursework, testing and service requirements, you will be able to apply for a standard teaching license. Mentor teachers are assigned to assist you and provide guidance during the three (3) year training period.

Salary and Benefits (after selection by a principal for a full-time position)

1) ARL teachers are paid a competitive salary and benefits package (medical/hospital, dental, vision care, life insurance) based on the negotiated agreement between CCSD and the Clark County Education Association. To see current teacher salaries, click here for the Teachers' Salary Schedule.

2) Successful ARL teachers receive credit for each year of teaching experience on the salary schedule. When they complete the program, submission of at least five evaluations indicating satisfactory performance are counted in lieu of student teaching for a license from the Nevada State Department of Education.
